How to listen to and diagnose the low end
A guide to sub, bass, kick, masking, and mono issues without relying on a score.
Weight is not the same as clarity
A mix can contain plenty of low end and still feel weak. Sub adds size, bass carries notes, and kick defines impact; when several elements dominate the same area at once, the result can feel heavy but undefined.
Listen by section
Compare verse, chorus, and instrumental sections instead of looking only at the song average. Look for sudden changes, disappearing notes, softened hits, and moments where bass becomes wider. Stability matters as much as energy amount.
Check mono and translation
Wide low end can lose strength when channels are summed. Listen in mono and on a small speaker, but do not treat one playback system as absolute truth. If a change improves clarity across contexts without destroying character, it is a useful experiment.
